"Uh...My name is Amanda and I have a bow-making obsession. It has been less than 24 hours since I made my last hair accessory. Help me to accept the things I cannot change, give me the strength to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference..."
From the time my little girl had enough fuzz on top of her baby noggin to scrape into a clip, she's worn bows. Bless her heart, I didn't give her much choice. As she grew, her "fashion sense" developed (ok, Mommy's urge to dress up her live dolly got stronger...). I never was satisfied with the selection of hairbows sold in most stores, though, so I set out to join the craze that currently seems to be sweeping the nation: "Mommy makes my bows."
Little did I know how addictive that would get!
My first few attempts were less than impressive, but as my work improved, Mia and I began to bask in the glow of frequent compliments, and friends and family often urged me to sell my wares. I didn't give it a whole lot of serious thought until one day in October, when Mia and I were doing some shopping (I'll not name the store, but it's pretty famous for its logo with the red bullseye). I had made my girl a pair of gigantic Halloween pigtail bows, and she was very proudly bouncing down the aisle that day, dressed to the nines and rocking those bows. We rounded the corner and a woman passing by us had a fit over them, asking where she could buy some for her girls! Believe it or not, I sold those bows right there, right off my baby's head. As I unfastened them, however, Mia began to wail, no doubt feeling very much robbed--after all, she had not been consulted during this transaction! The woman and I decided it would be much less traumatic if we simply exchanged contact information and I arranged to mail her an identical set that afternoon. Mia would keep her fantastic bows. And I landed my first customer.Months later, while on vacation at Disney World, I found myself being approached almost daily by enthusiastic moms wanting to know "which souvenir shop your daughter's precious bows came from." I'd admit they were my handiwork. Moms then asked for my card. I had none! "Never again," I thought after that, "If folks are this interested, I'll get myself together!" And I set to work.
Since then I have opened up shop on Etsy and Facebook, and am thoroughly enjoying exercising my creativity...Nowadays I can hardly sleep for the flood of ideas for unique and delightful "hair candy" swirling in my head! And I ordered myself some darn cute business cards, too.
Without question, the greatest joy I get is seeing little girls proudly wearing my creations. It's why I do what I do! I hope you'll follow my crazy blog, and contact me if you see something you like!
